What we do

Tree care, plant health care and tree preservation

Residential, commercial and city trees. Every job is done by certified arborists, or crews supervised directly by one.

Tree care

The everyday work: keeping trees healthy, safe and clear of the house.

  • Pruning and trimmingCrown raising, deadwood removal, weight reduction and thinning so limbs hold up in storms. There should be a reason for every cut.
  • Tree removalFor dead, dying or irreparably hazardous trees, large trees in tight spaces, and emergency removals after a storm.
  • Stump removalSmall and large grinders that fit through a backyard gate. You choose how the chips and hole are left.
  • Cabling and bracingCobra dynamic bracing, Tree Save and Branch Save cable systems for weak unions and split crotches. Installing cables for over 30 years.
  • Hazardous tree evaluationAn arborist looks at defects, the potential for failure and what is underneath, then tells you plainly whether the tree is a risk.

Plant health care

A health program for trees, the way you would have one for yourself.

  • Emerald Ash Borer treatmentInspection and treatment for ash trees worth saving, and honest advice on when to remove instead.
  • FertilizationProfessional-grade fertilizer with two forms of nitrogen, micronutrients and minerals, lasting 8 to 12 months in the soil.
  • Disease diagnosis and treatmentAnthracnose and the other diseases common in the Kansas City area.
  • Insect treatmentLeaf feeders, borers and Japanese beetle control.
  • Growth regulatorsSlows top growth so the tree puts energy into roots and defense, which helps in drought and heat.

Tree preservation

Planning ahead for valuable trees, especially before construction.

  • Building around treesMost roots sit in the top 12 to 18 inches of soil. Bring an arborist in before the excavator, not after.
  • Arborist consultingHealth and risk assessment, construction advice and special projects. We will recommend someone else when that serves you better.
  • Tree inventoryEvery tree on a commercial or large property tagged, located and tracked, with treatment status for each.
  • Lightning protectionCopper cable and ground systems for trees you cannot afford to lose.
  • Urban Forest ProductsCity logs milled into slabs and tables instead of firewood. Some are on display at the office.
"You can wreck your car and humans can put the car back just like new. Kill a 100 year old Oak tree and let me see a human being make it come alive. At HTC we look at trees more like a doctor would look at a human being."
Joe Hendrickson, founder
How we work

The standards on every job site

These are Hendrickson's own pruning specifications. Ask any tree company you are considering to put the same in writing.

Insured both ways

General liability insurance of $1,000,000 per incident for your protection, and workers' compensation for the crew.

No spikes in live trees

Live trees are never climbed with spurs. Pruning equipment is sterilized after working on diseased trees.

Industry safety standard

All equipment and work comply with the current ANSI Z133 standard for tree care operations. Weekly safety meetings for the whole crew.

Cleaned up every day

Lawns raked, streets and sidewalks swept, brush and logs hauled away before the crew leaves, unless you arrange otherwise.

Damage made right

Any damage to trees or property caused by HTC is repaired at no additional cost, to the owner's satisfaction.

Permits handled

HTC gets the licenses and permits the work needs, and sets up the barricades and ground crew to keep people and traffic safe.

Ash trees

Emerald Ash Borer will likely kill untreated ash trees

If you have green or white ash and nobody has inspected them, now is the time. Treatment is worth it for a healthy, valuable tree. If it is not worth it, plan the removal before the tree dies, because dead ash turns brittle fast and gets more dangerous and more expensive to take down.

Signs you may already be late: D-shaped exit holes in the trunk, woodpecker damage, and dead leaves at the top of the tree.

Not sure it is an ash? Ash has opposite branches and leaves, like maple, dogwood and horse chestnut, compound leaves of about seven leaflets, and bark with deep, jagged grooves.

4½ ft

Get an EAB estimate by email

  1. Wrap a tape measure around the trunk 4½ feet above the ground.
  2. Divide that number by 3.14. That is the diameter, or DBH.
  3. Email your name, address, phone, where each tree stands (front, back, NE and so on), the DBH of each, and a photo if you like.
Trees with more than one stem: measure each stem, then
2 stemsadd the diameters, divide by 2
3 stemsadd the diameters, divide by 2.60
4 stemsadd the diameters, divide by 3.40

Email the measurements to the office

On the job

The crew at work

Hendrickson calls its crew a team of industrial athletes: trained climbers who go to the Tree Care Industry Association expo, earn certifications, and spend rainy days in the shop library.
